PD Day and Statutory Holidays

Just a reminder, Friday, Feb. 16, is a PD Day (DVMS staff will be renewing our required Standard First Aid training) and Monday, Feb. 19, is the Family Day statutory holiday. (Also, see below -- there will be no school on Friday, March 2, due to Parent-Teacher interviews).

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Parent-Teacher interviews will take place during the evening of Thursday, March 1, and the morning of Friday, March 2 (DVMS is closed on the Friday; there is no school). There are also times for Lower Elementary parents the following week. As always, childcare will be available during your interview. (Note: if you were asked to pre-book an interview, you do not need to sign up again). If you haven't already done so, please click the link below to sign up.Please click here to select your Parent-Teacher interview timeslot.

Elementary Activities

  • Lower Elementary Dance:

Lower Elementary students will be participating in dance, at DVMS, with Chimira Andres, an Honours Integrated Science student at McMaster University who is also the current president and captain of the Mac Dance Competitive Varsity Dance Team. She has been a principal dancer/graduate from the School of Cadence Ballet in Toronto, ON. She also has been a senior dance instructor for 4 to 16-year-old dancers in the City of Mississauga dance program for approximately 7 years, and is a working contemporary dance artist with the Parahumans Dance Company. Lower students will dance with their class on Friday afternoons, Feb. 9, 23, and March 9, and should wear or bring appropriate, loose clothing. (A PD day and Parent-Teacher interviews fall on a couple of upcoming Fridays, hence the scattered dates).

  • Upper Elementary Soccer:

Upper Elementary students will be participating in soccer at the Ancaster Sports Centre on Friday Feb. 9, 23, and March 9. (A PD day and Parent-Teacher interviews fall on a couple of upcoming Fridays, hence the scattered dates). They will be bused there, but we are asking that Upper Elementary children be picked up from Ancaster Sports Centre (1030 Lower Lions Club Rd.) at 3:30 on those days (as with previous activities, we cannot charter a school bus for the return trip due to end of school day commitments for the bus companies). They will require indoor gym shoes, clothing to move and play in, and their water bottles. If you are not able to pick up from the sports centre, please let us know at

  • Kids Cafe and other Montessori Model Parliament Info:

Kid's Cafe will be on Thursday, Feb. 22, from 3:30-4:00, in the foyer. Kids's Cafe will then continue every Tuesday until the Upper Elementary sixth-year students head to Ottawa for their Montessori Model Parliament experience in April. Kid's Cafe is the primary fundraiser for their annual trip, organized and run by the students themselves (great practice for running the Strata Cafe when they get there).

  • Students may also be looking for support at home as they continue the research process. Be sure to ask your potentially-reluctant-to-discuss-things pre-teen what they may need help with.

Information and Reminders

  • Toddler Community Parent Education:

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, from 7:30-9:00, the DVMS Toddler Community would like to invite you to attend our Parent Education Evening on Independence. During the evening, we will discuss Functional Independence and why it is important, scaffolding your child's growing independence, and how to create opportunities for independence in your home. We'll also share some of our tricks we use in class to help your child care for themselves. There will be a chance for you to give examples of your successes and challenges and get feedback from the community of parents. In preparation for our discussion, please read Chapter 3 in How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way, by Tim Seldin. We encourage one or both parents attend this event -- Grandparents, nannies, and other caregivers are also welcome. We hope that by gathering later in the evening everyone has a chance to settle their children in with a caregiver and are free to have a night out with wine, nibbles, and an interesting discussion.

Childcare will not be available.

*This event is open to the entire DVMS school community and we invite all people interested in this topic and how it relates to children 0-3 years old to join us.
